Obituary For Donald James Ratkowski
Don Ratkowski, a devoted father, Marine Corps combat veteran, and founder of Protection Plus Tactics, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of honor, service, and leadership. Born into a lineage of military service, Don grew up under the influence of his German orphan grandfather, a WWII veteran, and his father, a Vietnam War veteran. His formative years were spent in Woodland, California, where he began training in boxing at the age of six, marking the beginning of a lifelong passion for martial arts and combat.
Don’s military career began in 1983 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps as an F/A-18 Plane Captain. He served with distinction in VMFA 323 fighter attack squadron, receiving numerous accolades, including a Meritorious Unit Commendation for historic achievements within his squadron. His service took him across the world, including deployments aboard the USS Coral Sea and combat operations during the bombing of Libya in 1985. Don's bravery was further demonstrated during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where he received multiple decorations for his service on the front lines.
After his distinguished military career, Don continued his commitment to protecting others through advanced training in pistol tactics and executive protection, working with high-profile clients in the precious stones industry. His firearms skills were honed under the guidance of renowned instructor Paul Castle, while his martial arts expertise was further refined by Grandmaster Harry Greene. Don dedicated his life to sharing this knowledge through his business, Protection Plus Tactics, always emphasizing the importance of mastering combative techniques rather than just handling weapons. His passion for teaching and dedication to his craft earned him the respect of his peers and trainees alike.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Don was a proud member of the Marine Corps League and VFW, and he found great fulfillment in his volunteer work with the Auburn Area Honor Guard, ensuring veterans received proper military honors during their final rites. His commitment to his community and fellow veterans was a testament to his character.
In addition to his military achievements, Don graduated with honors from Sierra College, earning an Associate of Arts degree. He expressed his creativity not only through fine arts but also through writing, publishing two books: Whiskey Sierra and Islamic State.
Above all, Don was a loving father to his two children—his son Alex, who worked alongside him in the family business, and his daughter Amber, who brought him great pride. His family was his greatest joy, and he cherished the time spent with them.
Don’s legacy will live on through his family, the countless individuals he trained and mentored, and the indelible mark he left on the community and the field of tactical training. He will be remembered as a warrior, a protector, a loving father, an inspiring author, and a talented artist. Semper Fidelis, Don. You will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved you.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen, his stepson Kief; his son Alex, and his daughter Amber whom he shared with his former wife, Kimberly.
